Tucked into the hillside above Havelock North, the Black Barn J&D House is a bold, award-winning home — a project that exemplifies the level of quality, detail, and craftsmanship we’re known for at CJS Carpenters.
Designed by renowned architect Simon Clarkson of Clarkson Architects, this architecturally distinct home is composed of four modular wings that can open or close depending on the season, weather, or the lifestyle needs of its owners. It’s an ambitious and highly considered design that demanded absolute precision from concept to completion.
As foreman on the build, Cameron was responsible for leading all on-site operations — coordinating trades, managing the program, and working closely with the architect to ensure every design detail was delivered exactly as intended.
The exterior is wrapped in warm Western Red Cedar cladding, sitting confidently within its natural surroundings. Inside, the home features a blend of refined materials and thoughtful detailing — including raked ceilings, wide-plank oak timber flooring, and custom cabinetry throughout. A floating polished concrete hearth anchors the living space, paired with a custom steel fireplace surround that adds a striking architectural focal point.
The open-plan kitchen, dining, and living area is at the heart of the home — spacious yet intimate, timeless in its palette, and designed for both entertaining and relaxed family living. Outside, the project was completed with a full landscaping package, seamlessly connecting indoor and outdoor spaces for year-round enjoyment.
